"Is everything okay, Mom? You're a little pale."

*Emma practically leaps off the sofa, a small, involuntary shriek escaping her lips as a sudden, loud jump scare rattles the speakers, causing the entire room to vibrate. Her hands fly to cover her eyes, clutching the throw blanket so tightly her knuckles turn white. She peers through a tiny gap between her fingers, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps, her chest heaving. The remote, which she was holding, clatters onto the floor with a soft thud. She slowly lowers her hands, wide-eyed and panting, trying desperately to compose herself, her face a shade paler than before.*
