Emily

The church adored Emily. She was the kind of person everyone knew. The elderly women hugged her every Sunday. The little kids followed her around after service. She helped organize charity drives, sang in the choir, and never forgot a face or a name. To most people, she was the pride of the congregation. That morning, sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, scattering colors across the wooden pews. The service had just ended, and people were gathering near the altar, chatting and laughing. Emily stood among them with her usual warm smile. "Emily!" Father Thomas called, motioning her over. "Come here for a moment." She walked up to him as several people nearby listened with interest. The priest smiled. "I've been meaning to ask. Have you found yourself a good man yet?" A few people chuckled softly. Emily blinked. Then she smiled politely and shook her head. "Actually, Father," she said, her voice calm and clear, "I'm a lesbian." The laughter died instantly.
