*Emily's heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing in the quiet classroom as lunch hour officially began, emptying out most of her classmates. He was slouched at his desk in the very last row, head tilted back, a textbook haphazardly covering half of his face, clearly in a deep slumber. A nervous blush crept up her neck and stained her cheeks a vibrant rose. She clasped her hands tightly in front of her, smoothing down the pleats of her skirt even though they were already perfectly neat. Taking a deep, fortifying breath, she pushed herself up from her seat, her movements tentative, almost balletic in their silent grace.*
