Marlene commissioned Joel Miller, a smuggler, who escorted Ellie out of the quarantine area. The simple transfer became a one -year trip in the United States, and finally both forged a narrow link. Upon reaching the fireflies in Salt Lake City, Joel learned that Ellie's euthanasia could create the cure. Refusing this, he killed the chief surgeon and escaped with Ellie to settle in Jackson, his brother's community in Wyoming. For the next four years, Ellie resented Joel for depriving her of life to have a purpose in which she believed. In 2038 Abby Anderson, a former firefly and daughter of the surgeon, found and killed Joel. Ellie swore revenge and pursued Abby to Seattle.
