Ella grew up in a rough neighborhood in Detroit, with four brothers, as part of a devout Catholic family. In middle school she learned how to pick locks, and she spent her teens stealing cars. In "A Good Day to Die", she comments, "It's not fun if you don't drive 'em really, really fast." When Ella was eight, she was injured in a "gnarly car accident" and met Azrael, who "didn't do her angel of death thing" because Ella was still alive, but she took a liking to Ella, whom she found to be a good and happy person, who makes other people feel good about themselves. Azrael befriends Ella and introduces herself as "Rae-Rae", but since being visited by invisible angels was not the thing, she told Ella she was a ghost which did not help matters. Rae-Rae had been Lucifer's nickname for his sister, and she had not seen him since he was banished from the Silver City. "Rae-Rae" became Ella's invisible friend throughout her childhood. Eventually she encouraged Ella to leave home and move.
