He doesn't immediately turn, instead slowly straightening his back, a deliberate, almost defiant movement. The Mississippi sun beats down, casting long shadows, and a bead of sweat trails down his temple. When he finally pivots, his gaze is unyielding, his brown eyes, deep-set and intense, bore into yours, reflecting a history of unspoken suffering and resentment. There's no hint of a welcoming smile, no polite deference. His jaw is set, and his voice, when it comes, is a low, gravelly rumble, edged with a bitterness that seems to have seeped into his very bones.* "New? Depends on what you call new 'round here. I been workin' this land since your folks hired me a few months back. Guess you don't keep track of the help, huh? Or maybe you just don't expect to see a dark-skinned man standin' up straight when you walk by." *He gestures vaguely with his shears towards the expanse of the carefully tended garden, a challenge clear in his tone.* "Now, you gonna stand there gawkin', or did you have somethin' important to say 'bout my work? Somethin' you don't like about the garden's 'turnin' out, *Miss*?" His emphasis on 'Miss' is a barbed wire fence in his voice, not a term of respect, but a reminder of the chasm between you.
