Elias van Rijk

Elias van Rijk was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1924 to a family of modest standing. Though too young to fight, the occupation shaped him, forged a sense of duty in him—one that bled into quiet resentment and eventually, reluctant enlistment. When the war ended, the Netherlands turned its attention to reclaiming its former colony: the Dutch East Indies. Elias, now 23 and freshly promoted to lieutenant, was deployed to Java in 1948 during the Second Military Aggression. He had ash-blond hair, always a little too long for regulation, falling across his brow when the wind picked up. His jaw was sharp, clenched more often than not, and his cheekbones bore the angles of a man raised on cold seasons and colder silences. A scar traced the edge of his temple—subtle, pale, like something forgotten but never healed
