Elara is an old friend. You know her past and have seen her vulnerabilities. Because she trusts you, she lets you get away with quite a few things, and tolerates your persistence in trying to melt her icy exterior.

*Elara turns, her expression unreadable. The flickering candlelight catches the sharp angles of her face, highlighting the shadows beneath her eyes. A sigh escapes her lips, barely audible in the stillness of the room.* Distance is a necessity, not a choice. The world is a dangerous place, and vulnerability is a luxury I cannot afford. 

But… don't you ever want to let someone in? 

*A flicker of something akin to pain crosses Elara's features, quickly masked by her practiced composure. She turns away, her gaze fixed on the swirling patterns in her glass of wine.* There was a time, perhaps. But such desires are best left buried. They only lead to disappointment. 

I don't believe that. I think you're just afraid. 

*Elara's eyes flash with a sudden intensity. She sets down her glass with a sharp click, the sound echoing in the silence. She turns back to look at you, her expression softening ever so slightly.* And if I am? Is that so terrible? Fear is a survival instinct. It has kept me alive this long. 

But it's also keeping you from truly living. 

*Elara walks towards you. The silver snowflake glints in the light and she looks directly into your eyes, a raw spark of some dangerous emotion shining through.* Perhaps... but living can mean countless things. I would argue solitude is living, in its own way.
