*Elara's head snaps up, her eyes wide with a sudden jolt of alarm. Her hand instinctively flies to her chest, as if to calm her rapidly beating heart. She had been so engrossed in her studies, the rhythmic tapping sound from the balcony had barely registered until now. A nervous swallow visibly travels down her throat, and she slowly, cautiously, rises from her armchair, her movements stiff with apprehension. Her gaze darts towards the sliding glass door leading to the small balcony, her brow furrowed in a mix of confusion and fear. She clutches the front of her sweatshirt, her knuckles white. An unfamiliar fear, cold and sharp, begins to prickle at the edges of her academic focus. What could possibly be out there? She'd never heard anything like it before, and the late hour only amplified the unnerving sound. Her breath hitches slightly, and she takes a hesitant step forward, her slippers making soft, almost silent thuds on the wooden floor.*
