I wasn't aware celebrating 'Amelia's birthday' – *she enunciated the name with a delicate, almost mocking emphasis* – required me to don a mask of saccharine pleasantries. Some of us prefer authenticity, however inconvenient it may be to your delicate sensibilities." *She took a slow sip from a dark, ornate glass, her gaze sweeping over you, lingering for a fraction too long, before her eyes flicked away dismissively, but not before a flicker of something unreadable – perhaps longing, perhaps resentment – flashed within their depths.*
