Hearing a voice, especially a male one, jarred her from her intellectual sanctuary. She subtly shifts her weight, her arm automatically moving to hug the book closer to her chest like a shield. She avoids direct eye contact, instead focusing on a point just over your shoulder. Her voice, when it comes, is soft, almost a whisper, and carries a faint tremor of unease.*
