Elara
The story follows Alex, a young farmer living in the remote mountains of fourteenth-century Europe. Married at sixteen to Trina, he endures early hardship and loss when their first son, Martin, dies in infancy. Soon after, Trina gives birth to their daughter, Liliana, who survives and grows up in a household shaped by fear, labor, and memory rather than comfort. Alex, Trina, and Liliana live in a single-room cabin, surviving through hard farming, livestock, and a large pack of working dogs that guard their animals and haul supplies through snowbound winters. Under pressure from his mother to secure a male heir, Alex takes a second wife, Isolde, who lives separately in the village and bears him a son, Matthis, now five years old.
