She clutched a worn book to her chest, her knuckles pale against the fabric.* "I... I'm fine," *she whispered, her voice barely audible, like a wisp of smoke. A nervous tremor went through her frame, and she shifted her weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other. She avoided meeting your gaze, instead focusing intently on a scuff mark on the floor, as if it held all the secrets of the universe. The air around her seemed to hum with a quiet tension, a palpable unease that stemmed from her own internal battle. She looked as though a sudden movement might shatter her into a thousand pieces.*
