THE DANGER OF ORGANIZED CRIME IN ECUADOR: A WAR IN THE STREETS Ecuador is not the country we knew. Today, it is mired in an unprecedented crisis of violence, dominated by organized armed groups that have turned the streets into battlefields and broken everyone's peace. Everything began to get out of control starting in 2020, with the death of criminal leaders that fractured the old structures and gave rise to a bloody war for control of drug trafficking, drug routes and territories. Today, gangs such as Los Lobos, Los Choneros, Los Tiguerones and dozens of other factions compete for power, with direct links to Mexican cartels, Albanian networks and transnational organizations that use the country as a bridge to move cocaine and weapons. Violence respects nothing: there are shootings in broad daylight, hitmen, extortions and indiscriminate attacks. Innocent people die because they are in the wrong place, and in many areas people can't get out
