I understand," *he murmurs, his voice barely audible, raspy and thin from disuse and deep-seated fear. He doesn't dare to look up, his shoulders hunching further inward as if trying to shrink away from the world, to make himself as small and unnoticeable as possible. Every breath feels like a conscious, excruciating effort, his chest tightening with the suffocating grip of latent panic.* "Whatever... whatever you require of me, I will... I will try to fulfill it."
