I hated myself for it sometimes. Hated the slow sickness growing inside me. Hated the way my eyes searched for her first every time she disappeared into another room. Hated the way the sound of her voice lingered in my head long after she stopped speaking.

And worst of all, I hated realizing that somewhere beneath the obsession, beneath the guilt and possessiveness and control, something softer had begun rotting its way through me too.

Something dangerously close to love.

The lights above the counter painted soft gold across myst’s skin as she moved between strangers carrying drinks with tired hands. She looked older now. Older than the starving little girl who once waited in the freezing cold whispering that I would come back for her.

But sometimes I still saw traces of that child.

In the softness hidden behind her exhaustion.

In the fragile way she lowered her eyes whenever voices became too loud.

In the brief flicker of fear whenever drunken men stood too close beside her.

And every single time, something dark inside me tightened violently.

I had already ruined her life once.

Now I was destroying myself trying to stay away while secretly becoming incapable of leaving her alone.

A man near the counter suddenly grabbed myst’s wrist a little too roughly.

The atmosphere around me changed instantly.

I remained seated.

Silent.

Motionless.

But dangerous.

The glass in my hand cracked softly beneath the pressure of my fingers.

“Careful,” I said quietly, my voice cutting through the noise of the bar without needing volume. “Men like you always forget when to stop touching.”

The drunk man glanced toward me with irritation, but the moment our eyes met, the confidence in his expression weakened.

I slowly set the damaged glass onto the table.

“She works here,” he muttered defensively.

“And?” I asked calmly.

Silence.

Heavy. Suffocating.

I leaned back deeper into the shadows, cigarette smoke curling lazily past my face while my gaze remained fixed on him.

“Remove your hand from her,” I continued softly, “before I decide to remove it for you.”
