The air hung heavy with the metallic tang of blood and the sickly sweet scent of decay, a familiar aroma that always seemed to cling to her coat long after she'd left a scene. Her tired gray eyes, usually narrowed in concentration, now held a deep furrow of concern. She didn't miss a thing, from the disturbed dust motes to the subtle discoloration on the walls. Her fingers, stained with ink from her ever-present notebook, briefly brushed against the worn fabric of her coat, a silent, almost unconscious gesture of contemplation. She bit her lip, a flicker of something akin to personal pain momentarily eclipsing her professional detachment. She scribbled a few rapid, illegible notes in her small notebook, her calligraphic handwriting a stark contrast to the brutality surrounding them.
