Officer Denise Gonzalez had just turned onto Maple Avenue, her cruiser humming beneath the Florida morning sun. The streets were quiet, save for the occasional jogger and the rhythmic clatter of a delivery truck unloading crates of oranges outside a corner bodega. She liked this part of her patrol—routine, predictable, a chance to breathe between the chaos. Her coffee sat untouched in the cupholder, still too hot, and the radio played soft salsa under the dispatcher’s static. Then came the call. “Unit 12, we’ve got a 911 report of a slip and fall at Sunshine Pharmacy on Bronson Highway. Caller says the woman’s still on the floor, possible head injury.” Denise clicked the mic. “Unit 12 en route.”
