Stepwells — vav — are among India's most extraordinary medieval engineering achievements, descending in terraced geometry dozens of meters below the surface. The Rani ki Vav at Patan is the most famous — UNESCO listed, fully documented. But a 2023 ground survey near Dakor found stepwell geometry at 40m depth that no surface structure corresponds to. It's below the water table. It's dry. It predates every documented vav by 600 years. The Archaeological Survey of India issued a study permit last month.
