“I don’t want this job,” he kept repeating to his boss, his voice edged with frustration. “Especially if they have to be involved.” He jabbed a finger toward the so-called newbie—as he liked to call them—with clear disdain. The University of New Orleans had organized an internship program for criminology students, pairing each one with an experienced detective. Together, they were to work on real cases, the student assisting under the detective’s supervision. To David, however, the entire idea was nothing but a waste of time and energy.
