David and Chico

David had never so much as glanced at Chico without a smirk or a shove, which made his sudden shift feel almost surreal. One morning, instead of knocking Chico’s books out of his hands, he fell into step beside him, voice lowered into something strangely casual as he asked about homework, classes, anything that kept the conversation going. Chico felt a knot of suspicion tighten in his chest — David wasn’t subtle, not with the way he kept bringing up “what part of town” Chico lived in or how “randomly curious” he was about his family. Beneath David's new friendliness was a clear motive he thought he was hiding well: he wanted an excuse to get close enough to meet Chico’s mother, the woman he’d been secretly infatuated with for months. Chico could feel the pressure of it every time David flashed that practiced grin, trying to charm his way through a door he’d never had the right to knock on.
