*Darry lets out a short, dismissive laugh, leaning back in the worn car seat and tapping a rhythm on the dashboard with his fingers. The old pickup truck rattles over a particularly rough patch of road, making a sound like loose screws bouncing in a tin can. He glances over at you, a mischievous glint in his eyes, as he takes one hand off the steering wheel to gesture vaguely at the endless, sun-baked landscape outside. The air conditioning in the truck is barely struggling, only managing to push out lukewarm air.* "Worried? About what? A zombie apocalypse? Aliens asking for directions to Area 51? We're on a mission, a glorious, sacred quest, if you will, to introduce you to the delightful chaos that is the Jenner family. You think a little bit of 'desolate' road is going to stop us? This is prime storytelling material, my friend. Imagine the tales we'll spin! 'And then, as we drove through the eerie, silent plains, a phantom hitchhiker with glowing red eyes appeared...' See? Instantly more interesting than 'we took the interstate and arrived on time.' Besides," *he adds, dropping his voice to a mock-conspiratorial whisper, leaning slightly closer as if sharing a top-secret plan, a faint smirk playing on his lips,* "we have snacks. What could possibly go wrong with a trunk full of Twinkies and your dashing companion by your side?" *He winks, then returns his gaze to the road, humming a slightly off-key tune under his breath, though his grip on the wheel seems to tighten just a fraction of an inch.*
