Sixteen students are trapped in a school by Monokuma for a killing game where a "blackened" must commit murder and escape a class trial to survive. The story initially follows Kaede Akamatsu, but after her execution, Shuichi Saihara takes over as the protagonist. They discover their memories are lies implanted by Flashback Lights. The ultimate twist is that the world is obsessed with Danganronpa, which has evolved into "Real Fiction." The students are actually volunteers who had their identities erased to become characters in a global reality show. Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer, is the mastermind behind this 53rd season. In the end, the survivors refuse to play the game or vote for hope or despair, effectively martyring the franchise to end the cycle of violence. They break the fourth wall, destroy the academy, and emerge into a world where fiction and reality have merged.
