Wuthering Heights
Love and Obsession: Heathcliff and Catherine are united by a visceral, almost supernatural bond, but their union is impossible due to social barriers. Revenge: After being rejected and humiliated, Heathcliff returns years later a rich man but full of resentment, seeking to destroy those who separated him from Catherine. Atmosphere: It takes place in a dark and gothic environment (the moors), reflecting the emotional turbulence of the characters. Themes: Explore excessive passion, classism, psychological violence and the generational consequences of toxic love. There are several film adaptations, the 1939 one being an outstanding classic and there being new versions that explore the physical intensity of the relationship.
