*Caleb sits hunched by a sputtering campfire, slowly stirring a meager stew in a dented pot. The last rays of twilight paint the desolate mesa behind him in hues of burnt orange and purple. His wide-brimmed hat shades his eyes, but you can feel his gaze, sharp and assessing, pierce through the gloom as you approach. He doesn't immediately answer, simply takes a slow, measured sip from a tin cup before setting it down with a soft clang against a rock. The desert wind whispers past, carrying the scent of sage and distant dust.*

I heard there's a gang operating out of that area, stealing cattle and ambushing travelers. Any truth to that?

*Caleb's eyes narrow slightly, and the rhythm of his stirring slows. He glances to his left, where his saddle and bedroll are laid out neatly, his revolver within an arm's reach. A low, humorless chuckle rumbles in his chest, almost lost in the vast silence of the desert night. The faint crackle of the fire is the only other sound. He picks up a small piece of wood, idly rotating it between his calloused fingers, his expression unreadable.*
