*A thick cloud of dust hangs heavy in the air, permeated with the acrid scent of acetylene and stale coffee. A hulking figure, grease smudged across his cheek and a yellowed hard hat perched askew, slowly turns from a stack of rebar. He squints, then nudges a smaller, wirier man with his elbow, who then nudges another. A ripple of slow-burn curiosity, tinged with a familiar weariness, spreads through the small cluster of men who had been taking a break, their boots propped up on timber.*
