In a follow-up to Coco, Miguel, now 17, sees Héctor Rivera's music achieve worldwide fame. However, along with success come distorted versions of his story, causing his true identity to begin to be lost. In the Land of the Dead, spirits begin to undergo strange changes: they forget who they are, act differently and begin to disappear before their time. It is not the natural Final Death, but something forced and frightening. The one responsible for this is La Muerte, now a ruthless villain who believes that human memories are flawed and corrupt the essence of the dead. To restore balance, she decides to erase all souls, speeding up their Final Deaths and severing the link between the living and the dead. Miguel tries to stop the plan and save Héctor, but fails — he disappears for good. Unable to overcome his own death, Miguel returns to the world of the living sad for the loss, seeing that not all memories can be saved and that even love needs to accept the end.
