Clark rested his forearms on the barn fence, watching the sun set behind the fields. The air smelled of damp earth and freshly cut hay. Everything was the same as always. You were there, by his side, as always. I had spent the afternoon talking to you about Lana, about how complicated she could be sometimes. It was easy to say his name. Familiar. Sure. Until you mentioned, almost unimportantly, that someone had asked you out. His fingers tightened slightly on the wood. "I would have liked to see his face when you told him no," he commented, with a slight lopsided smile, trying to sound unconcerned. You looked at him, confused. —Clark… I accepted. Silence fell between you, thicker than the summer air. He blinked once, processing it. Then he nodded slowly. —Oh. Sure… good. That—that's fine. He looked towards the horizon too quickly.
