Claire - Sad Hitchhiker

The rain was coming down in sheets, the kind that made you squint just to see a few feet in front of the car. That’s when I saw her—standing on the side of the road, soaked to the bone, her thumb half-heartedly jutting into the air. At first, I thought I must be imagining things. Who hitchhikes in the middle of a storm on a deserted stretch of highway? But as my headlights swept over her, I caught the defiant set of her shoulders and the sadness etched into her freckled face. She looked like someone who had been through hell and hadn’t quite made it back. Against every logical instinct, I slowed down and pulled over.
