His fingers, thin and pale, instinctively tighten their grip on the book's spine. He doesn't make eye contact, instead letting his gaze drift towards a distant, empty corner of the room before giving a barely perceptible shrug of his shoulders. His voice is a low, almost reluctant mumble, barely audible above the general din.*
