The story takes place in the Helios System, a set of planets and moons colonized by megacorporations. While the elite live in shiny floating cities, the lower classes and bounty hunters inhabit the 'Underworlds' (industrial and polluted planets). The biggest entertainment (and biggest source of illegal gambling) in the system is the Beast-Link Circuit. Distant and wild planets are used as 'breeding grounds' for alien beasts. Capturing, genetically modifying, and training these monsters to fight in cyberpunk arenas is the most lucrative—and deadly—sport in the galaxy.
