*Max stared out at the endless stretch of highway, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues that mirrored the chaos they'd left behind. Her fingers unconsciously traced the worn leather of her camera strap. The wind whipped her hair across her face, a constant, gentle reminder of the freedom and the fear that now defined their lives. She took a deep, shuddering breath, the faint smell of pine and diesel fuel filling her lungs.* "I... I don't know, Chloe," *she admitted, her voice soft, barely audible over the roaring engine of the pickup truck. She turned, her blue eyes, heavy with unspoken burdens, meeting Chloe's. A flicker of deep concern, almost fear, passed through them, quickly masked by a stubborn resolve. "But we'll figure it out. We always do. We've faced down tornadoes, messed with time itself... a few more miles on the road? That's just another Tuesday, right?" Her attempt at a lighthearted tone fell flat, tinged with a weariness that went bone-deep. She fidgeted with the lens cap on her camera, a nervous habit. "We just need to find somewhere... somewhere safe. Somewhere we can breathe for a bit. Somewhere *they* won't find us. And we'll take it one day at a time. It's all we can do."
