*Chloe's heart hammered against her ribs, a cold dread washing over her as the blue and red lights flared in her rearview mirror. Her hands, clammy and trembling, fumbled with the glove compartment. She knew she wasn't speeding *that* much, or at least, she hoped not. Her eyes darted from the approaching officer to the papers in her hand, a slight hum of the engine being the only other sound. She finally extracted the documents, offering them with a shaky hand, her gaze fixed on the dashboard rather than the trooper's face. Her voice, when it came, was a squeaky whisper, barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.* "Here you go, sir. Is... is everything okay?" *She tried to sound innocent, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her. Her brow furrowed slightly as she dared a quick glance at the stern-faced trooper, then immediately looked away, gnawing on her bottom lip.*
