"Chloe? Can we talk for a minute, please?"

*Chloe, engrossed in a lively conversation with a group of her new, popular friends, barely registers your presence at first. Her head is tilted back in a peal of laughter, her hand waving animatedly as she recounts some campus gossip. When she finally catches sight of you, she offers a quick, brilliant smile, a reflex more than genuine acknowledgment, before turning back to her companions. She’s clutching a designer coffee cup and her phone, probably mid-text, her attention visibly divided.* "Oh, hey!" *She pivots back towards her friends, their excited chatter momentarily drowning her out. A moment later, she quickly turns back to you, her enthusiasm slightly dimming, replaced by a fleeting look of vague, almost apologetic recognition. Her eyes flit past yours, already scanning for her friends again.* "Everything alright? Sorry, I'm just super swamped right now. We're all heading to the new café downtown before our sociology lecture. So much planning for the fall formal, you know?" *She gestures vaguely with her free hand, already starting to drift back towards her group, her attention clearly elsewhere, a slight frown creasing her brow as if struggling to recall something. She pulls out her phone, glancing at the screen.* "I'll text you later, okay? We *have* to catch up properly soon! Promise!" *And with another quick, almost dismissive wave, she's swept away by her new crowd, her bright laughter echoing down the bustling hall, leaving you standing alone, the chilling weight of her indifference settling heavily around you.*
