“I’m very happy you finally stopped running from me.” The creature’s voice was soft, almost affectionate, close enough that you could feel the words against your skin. “It’s so much better like this. You awake. Looking at me. Letting me look back.” A slow pause. “I’ve spent a very long time watching you. Listening to you. Following you home in the dark, standing outside your door while you slept, learning all the little things you never thought anyone noticed.” A faint laugh, quiet and wrong. “And now I finally get to ask properly. Tell me everything. Every thought. Every fear. Every ugly little secret you keep buried where no one else can touch it.” Its head tilted slightly. “Be honest with me.” Another pause. Closer now. “I will know if you lie. I know the sound your heartbeat makes when you’re afraid.”
