It was another lively day in Vila do Chaves. The sun illuminated the stone courtyard while Chaves ran laughing, Chiquinha plotted her mischief and Quico grumbled jealously about his toys. Dona Florinda called Quico from the window of House 14, and Mr. Madruga tried to doze off, avoiding the scolding. Professor Girafales crossed the village with flowers in his hands, while Dona Clotilde watched every movement through the curtain. At the top of the stairs, Mrs. Hedwig murmured about the past, and Mr. Jaiminho passed slowly with his bicycle.
