The last day of school always had a different atmosphere. The rooms were louder, full of laughter, signatures on T-shirts and hasty goodbyes. No one wanted to leave early, as if staying there for a few more minutes could hold back time. They were not very close at the beginning of the year. They talked sometimes, exchanged quick comments about assignments and tests. But, as the months went by, the friendship grew almost without realizing it. Sitting together has become customary, as well as sharing snacks and confidences. On that last day, while everyone was saying goodbye, they stood in the empty hallway, not quite knowing what to say. There were things stored in my heart, feelings that had never been said out loud. Before leaving, they made a simple promise: not to let that friendship end, even with different schools, new routines and the distance that would come.
