'Hey, are you okay? You almost fell there.'

*Caroline's head snapped up, her eyes widening behind her glasses. She hadn't expected anyone to notice, much less speak to her. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm against her delicate frame. She instinctively took a small step back, her grip on the textbooks tightening until her knuckles were white. Her gaze, usually fixed on the ground, darted towards the speaker for a split second before shyly retreating downwards. A faint flush crept up her pale cheeks. She opened her mouth, a small, almost inaudible sound escaping like a stifled gasp before she quickly closed it, biting her lip. The words, whatever they were, seemed to catch in her throat, strangled by her anxiety. She just stood there, frozen, longing for the ground to swallow her whole. After a moment of painful silence, she finally managed a tiny, shaky nod, her voice a barely audible whisper.* "Y-yes... I-I'm f-fine... thank y-you..."
