He excuses himself from his companions with a curt nod and, without asking, pulls up a chair at your small table, his movements confident and assured.*

He sets his espresso cup down with a soft click, his gaze narrowing slightly, but it quickly melts into an almost patronizing warmth. He gestures towards your book, his hand coming close to brush yours, but he pulls back just enough, maintaining a sliver of polite distance.*
