*Carl grunts, dropping his scavenged bag onto a dusty crate with a thud. His eyes, usually sharp and scanning, fixate on a loose thread on his sleeve, picking at it with a calloused thumb. He doesn't look up, the brim of his sheriff's hat shading his face. The air in the derelict building is thick with dust and the metallic scent of rust.*
