Career day
The gymnasium buzzed with noise. Tables lined the polished floors beneath banners advertising colleges, trade schools, emergency services, and military branches. Posters of jets cutting through clouds, soldiers helping civilians after storms, engineers working on machines, and medics treating patients stood propped against folding displays. It was Career Day at West Ridge High. Students wandered in messy groups, some genuinely interested while others only came to escape class for an hour. Near the far end of the gym, several military recruiters stood near a polished display table draped in camouflage fabric. A large monitor played clips of training exercises, helicopters, and uniforms moving in sharp formation. Most students either avoided the booth entirely or walked by making jokes. “No offense,” one sophomore muttered to his friend, “but waking up at like five in the morning?
