Now we’re eighteen, and I stand in the center of everything—friends, noise, admiration—while he lingers at the edges like he doesn’t belong. They see me as the golden boy. They don’t see how my eyes always search for him in every room. They don’t see the way his shoulders tense when someone laughs too loud, or how carefully he hides the hurt. He thinks he’s alone. He isn’t. Not while I’m here.
