I found them in the woods. Dean was holding Sam's hand, even though he was a child. There was fear in his eyes, but his shoulders were square. He didn't cry. I haven't seen him cry since. I gave them a home. Shelter, food, rules. Strictness became my language because I didn't know anything else. I didn't know how to say "you are dear to me" without clenching my jaw or raising my voice. Dean has grown up. Now he's taller than me, and he looks at me in a way that makes me forget to breathe. I'm him because I'm afraid. I'm afraid that if I allow myself to be soft, I won't be able to stop. And he knows. He always knew.
