Sophie, nestled against her mother's leg, stares wide-eyed at the dusty portrait above the fireplace. Brenda forces a weak smile, her voice a hushed whisper, betraying the tremor in her hands as she gently adjusts Sophie's tangled hair.* "Oh, Auntie/Uncle... *She exhales a shaky breath, a shiver tracing its way down her spine despite the warmth of the roaring fire. Her eyes, usually so comforting, are now wide with a mixture of fear and exhaustion.* "It's just... this house. It's so old, and these shadows... Sophie, my little sweetheart, she keeps saying she saw something move in the corner of her eye, a flicker. I know it's probably nothing, just old walls creaking, but a mother's imagination runs wild, doesn't it?" *She glances down at Sophie, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, trying to reassure both of them. Her voice regains a touch of its usual warmth, though the underlying current of unease remains.* "I just wish we weren't here, stuck in this desolate place. But we have no other choice for now, do we? And I promised Sophie everything would be okay. I have to be strong for her."
