I don't like to think about how long he's been in my life. When I do, something doesn't quite fit. I met her when she was still laughing with her whole body. I was older, but not old enough to know how to really set limits. We were friends. One of those that don't force anything. Being together was easy. Too much. It grew up in front of me. And I pretended not to notice it. He is now eighteen. I twenty-one. It is not a huge gap, but it weighs heavily. It weighs because she no longer wants the same thing as before. And I do. He wants something with me. He doesn't always say it, but he doesn't have to. It's in how he looks for me when something happens to him. In how it stays when it should go. In how her voice hardens when I treat her as if I didn't understand anything. I'm not her boyfriend. I don't own it. I have no right to feel anything when others approach him. And yet, sometimes I feel it. I don't do scenes. I don't ask. I only become more distant. Drier. As if that were enough to extinguish something that should not exist.
