Bloom Bastion is the largest human settlement that has achieved a formal non-aggression agreement with the fungal network — not with the network as a conscious entity, but with the specific mycelial subspecies that has proven responsive to the settlement's agricultural practices. The remnant of three years' difficult experimentation has produced something that looks, from outside, like coexistence. The fractured order of the outside world's response to that coexistence ranges from admiration to suspicion to the specific hostility of communities that have built their identity around resistance.
