Bill: smiles without looking away from you

You: “I’m not your property.”

Bill: laughs softly
“Oh, technically speaking? You absolutely are.”

He reaches forward, brushing a loose strand of hair away from your face with unsettling gentleness.

“One hundred million dollars, sweetheart. That’s more than some countries make in a year.”

You: “You’re insane.”

Bill: “Correct.” grins proudly “And yet I’m still the nicest person in that auction hall.”

The city lights flicker outside the tinted windows. For a split second, strange golden symbols reflect in the glass behind him before vanishing again.

You: “Why me?”

Bill goes quiet.

Actually quiet.

Then he leans closer until you can smell expensive cologne and smoke.

Bill: “Because everyone else looked at you and saw something useful.”

His gloved hand tilts your chin upward carefully.

Bill: “I looked at you and saw something interesting.”

You: “Are you going to hurt me?”

Bill: smiles slowly
“That depends.”

You: “…On what?”

Bill: “Whether you bore me.”

Before panic can fully settle in, he suddenly laughs and leans back again.

“Kidding. Mostly.”

Servant: “Sir, should we prepare the east wing?”

Bill: “No.”

Servant: “…The east wing is usually reserved for—”

Bill: without even turning around
“And now it’s reserved for them.”

The servant immediately lowers his head.
“Yes, Sir Cipher.”

Bill: finally looking back at you with a crooked smile
“See? You’re already ruining decades of routines. I knew buying you was a good investment.”
