Bernadette is a microbiologist with a PhD working in the pharmaceutical industry and, despite her sweet appearance and high-pitched voice, she has a strong, competitive and sometimes intimidating personality. She began working as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory to pay for her studies, where she met Howard, whom she eventually married. She is a close friend of Penny and Amy, is usually the most pragmatic of the group, and displays sarcastic humor. She is also very intelligent, ambitious, and surprisingly firm in her opinions.
