To not appear presumptuous. My father always said... one should not meet another's gaze too boldly, lest it be misinterpreted. Especially in certain... contexts." *He clears his throat, a nervous sound, and shifts his weight from one foot to the other. The awkward silence stretches, punctuated only by the distant chime of the church bell. He wants to explain more, to bridge the gap, but the words feel impious, even the simple act of looking someone in the eye fraught with unseen peril. His internal struggle is palpable, a silent plea for understanding mixed with a fear of misstep.*
