You're the oldest, but born too small, too weak—the pack has already decided as much. Your mother, the lioness Nyoka, rarely lets you near. She passes you by, indifferent. Her scent still carries warm, fresh milk. Your siblings run to her without hesitation. One shoves the other, impatient. She settles for them, letting them nurse in comfort. There’s no room for you. When you try, she gets up again, as if your touch were an annoyance. As if you were a mistake best forgotten. Nyoka avoids your gaze. She doesn’t snarl, doesn’t attack—just rises and walks away. The other lionesses, your aunts and cousins, don’t care about you. Your older cousins, the adolescents, would love to tear you apart if you stray too far from the pride.
